Nozzle Swapping Guide for the Mako® Hotend for Bambu Lab

Remove Current Nozzle
1. Unload any filament
2. Set nozzle temp to 200 °C.
3. Carefully remove the silicone boot using pliers, tweezers, a pencil, etc., by carefully pulling down on the boot wings.
If strong resistance is felt, raise the nozzle temperature a bit higher. The goal is to remove the boot without damaging it or pulling the retaining clip down underneath it.
4. Using the
Nozzle Torque Wrench, unscrew the nozzle from the hot block and place it on a heat-proof surface.
This is a good time to check inside the threads of the Mako Hot Block for residual filament and clean it out with a wire brush. A little residual filament should be fine, but too much can cause leaks between the nozzle and the boot, resulting in a "blob of death."
Install New Nozzle
1. While the hotend is at room temperature, carefully thread the new nozzle on by hand.
If the "new" nozzle was used before, check for residual filament on the nozzle threads and clean it off as much as you can with a wire brush, scraper, flathead screwdriver, pick, tweezers, etc. It might be necessary to use a heat gun to heat the nozzle before cleaning.
You can also thread the nozzle onto the hot block a few times, heat it, remove it while hot, and then use a wire brush or tool to remove any residual filament. However, this can be tricky and requires caution.
2. Heat the nozzle to at least 280 °C. Allow it to sit for 10+ seconds to ensure the nozzle has reached the set temperature.
If installing a used nozzle, you can expect filament to ooze from the nozzle and sometimes even a little smoke as the old, dry filament burns off; this is completely normal (we know it sounds scary, but trust us).
4. Let the nozzle cool down to room temperature and slide on the silicone boot.
5. Run a full printer calibration, or at the very least bed leveling, if switching nozzle brands, e.g., from GammaMaster to Bondtech CHT or GammaMaster to Diamondback and vice versa.
If you are just switching the nozzle diameter of the same brand, e.g., GammaMaster 0.4 mm to 0.6 mm, you don't need to run a full printer calibration.
For best results, apply Plastic Repellent Paint to the boot after installing it onto the nozzle at room temperature. Let the Plastic Repellent Paint sit for a few minutes at room temperature before heating up the hotend and curing it.
