Avoiding Clogs on the Mako® Hotend with Low-Temperature Filaments

Due to the Mako's extended melt-zone and high flow-rate capability, some users may experience clogs when printing with PLA or other filaments with low melting temperatures if certain precautions are not taken. Clogs can occur if heat rises within the hotend (heat creep) & causes the filament to soften too early, leading to blockages in the hotend/nozzle.

Recommendations for Avoiding Clogs

  • Keep your printer in a room with an ambient temperature of at most 25°C.

    We have successfully printed at much higher ambient temps, but the clog risk increases significantly.
  • Use the Bambu Lab Cool Plate or keep the bed temperature at 55°C or below with PLA.
  • You can often lower the nozzle temperature by 5-10 °C because of the different thermodynamics of the Mako Hot Block compared to the stock Bambu.
    • This is especially recommended when printing detailed objects at slower speeds and lower flow-rates. 
  • Ensure the filament is dry.
  • For enclosed machines, print with the door & lid open.
    • If you are using the AMS on your printer, you can try printing this Lid Lift Device from YelTrik Designs to have the lid open, without needing to relocate your AMS from the top of your printer.
  • Bambu Studio Slicer Settings
    • Make sure to use our custom material profiles for the Mako Hotend here.
    • In the Bambu Studio Slicer, reduce the retraction length to 0.6 mm (Printer Settings > Extruder) & disable “Long Retraction When Cut” (Filament Settings > Setting Overrides). If you don’t see the “Long Retraction When Cut” setting, there’s no need to worry. It appears this setting is only available for certain versions of Bambu Studio and for specific printers.    
  • Switching From High-Temp Materials to Low-Temp.
    • If you just printed with a high-temp material and want to switch to a low-temp one, it is advisable to manually heat the nozzle to the higher material's melting point again and manually extrude some before trying to load the low-temp material. 
      • For example, going from ASA to PLA: Heat the nozzle to 280 °C, push PLA into the top of the extruder, then manually extrude a few times. 
      • If using the AMS to do this, ensure the nozzle temp is set to at least 250 °C when switching materials. 
        • If the lower-temp material will not extrude using the AMS, it is likely not clogged but is being blocked by the higher-temp material still in the hot block after being cut. You will need to do the manual purging and loading process described above to load the PLA.
